Celebrating teaching excellence and its importance at Queen’s

Jane Chin, a professor in the Faculty of Education, and Nancy Dalgarno, Director of Education Scholarship with the Office of Professional Development and Educational Scholarship (OPDES), and an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) in Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences and Health Professions Education, hold up their teaching awards.
Each year, teaching awards at Queen’s University are conferred to educators and staff who excel in teaching and promote innovative and inclusive learning environments.
On Oct. 17, Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane and Vice-Provost Teaching and Learning Gavan Watson hosted a reception at Grant Hall to celebrate these annual awards and recognize the 2022-23 recipients.
“These individuals and teams are providing students with extraordinary opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills, engage in critical thinking, and leverage new technologies,” said Vice-Provost Watson during the event opening. “My sincere congratulations to all recipients and thank you to everyone joining us to celebrate these important university-wide awards.”

The event honoured recipients of over thirty teaching awards conferred by the faculties and several partners such as the Office of the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning), the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs, and the Society for Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS). The Alma Mater Society (AMS) also has awards that are usually included but the 2023-2024 AMS Teaching Award recipients will be named in December and April.

“I am very proud of the remarkable efforts and achievements of educators at Queen’s,” said Principal Deane during his welcome. “So many teaching and learning initiatives are advancing our strategic goals and it’s an honour to celebrate the individuals who are transforming educational experiences and preparing students to have a positive impact on the world.”

The Principal’s Teaching and Learning Awards were among the awards celebrated at the reception and the nomination period for 2023-24 is now open until Jan. 31, 2024. To assist with nominations, a webinar was recently hosted by the Office of the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Topics of discussion included the required components of successful awards, the evaluation criteria and process, and strategies that enrich and strengthen a competitive nomination.
