Seminar in Literary Interpretation

Book cover of madame bovary

Madame Bovary

Published in 1857 by Gustave Flaubert, Madame Bovary: Provincial Manners is lauded as one of the greatest novels ever written.  We will study this novel closely, exploring its style, the historical context in which it was written, the obscenity trial that surrounded it, the ideas and cultural critique with which its engages, and its diverse interpretations and adaptions since its publication.  This novel study will also be an occasion to delve deeply into a variety of literary topics and devices, such as realism, character, gender, and intertextuality.  Time permitting, we will watch film adaptations of the novel and consider questions of translation.  You will need to purchase Lydia Davis's translation of Madame Bovary.  All other materials will be provided.
