Teaching Assistant Positions (May to August 2024)

In accordance with the collective agreement between Queen's University and Teaching Assistants (PSAC Local 901) applications are invited from qualified individuals for the following spring/summer term online courses:

DEVS 102-700: Canada in the World
Canada in the World will help students build knowledge and analytical capacities in global development, with a focus on Canada. The course examines how processes of global development are differentiated across borders and axes of gender, racialization, and colonization. Students will explore applications of theories of global change.

DEVS 220-700: Introduction to Indigenous Studies
An introduction to Indigenous ways of knowing organized on a historical basis, from creation to present day, emphasizing Indigenous cultures and experiences in Canada. Students will critically examine colonialism. Indigenous perspectives will be introduced through lecture, reading and assignments, and from contributions from elders, members of Indigenous communities and Indigenous scholars.

DEVS 250-700:  Global Environmental Transformations
Examines the relationship between development and environmental change by introducing social science perspectives on themes including energy, agriculture, climate, urbanization, and water. With a focus on combining macro- and micro-analysis, the course reflects on the meaning of development in an era of global environmental transformation.
Instructor:  M. Hostetler

Responsibilities
The teaching assistant will be expected to grade assignments using MS word, facilitate online discussions forums, and make themselves available online to assist students with course work. More specific expectations will be covered in the beginning of the term.
 
Requirements
Applicants should have strong familiarity with the course material. Previous experience with online courses, familiarity with learning management systems (e.g. onQ) and videoconferencing software (e.g. Zoom), as well as appropriate experience in teaching and/or in applied development work will be an asset. Excellent communication skills are essential, as is superior computer proficiency and ability to work closely with undergraduate students. Successful candidates will be expected to have continuous access to high-speed internet and a computer that meets ITS minimum requirements in order to provide prompt online advice and electronically monitor the progress of students.

This position is in support of an online course.  Some training and preparation are needed before the start of the course.  Candidates must be prepared to work outside the regular 9-5 work week.  
 
Contract Hours
The hours in the TA contract will be determined based on the actual course enrollment.   Current enrollment would indicate that the contract hours would be no more than 130 hours over the four-month term.

The process of assigning qualified graduate students to these positions is outlined in the Collective Agreement between the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC 901) and Queen’s University. Remuneration will be in accordance with the Collective Agreement, and appointments are subject to funding or enrollment criteria.  Applications will be reviewed, and positions allocated in reference to candidates’ teaching and academic experience as it applies to the course subject field and in reference to the candidates’ priority for a Teaching Assistantship as specified by the Collective Agreement.
