Giving Effective Feedback: The Hallmark of a Great TA

Constructive feedback has been identified as one of the most powerful positive influences on students’ learning achievement (Hattie, 1987; Black & Wiliams, 1998). In this workshop you will have the opportunity to explore the nature and effects of effective feedback and consider ways to maximize its benefits in your own teaching context. This activity-centred session has been designed to help you; identify some of the critical issues in giving effective feedback; align feedback to learning expectations; and communicate those expectations to students.

Learning Outcome Initiatives at Queen's

Institutes, departments, and schools of higher learning in Canada increasingly require that Learning Outcomes are foundational to the development of assessment, instruction, and curricular organization. Queen’s University is no exception, and has allocated substantial resources and expertise to negotiate practical, logistical, and theoretical challenges implicit to this shift. The Learning Outcome Panel will highlight current departmental and institutional initiatives, as well as discussion on the nature of learning outcomes and opportunities and challenges involved with large scale implementation.

Teaching by Design: From Learning Outcomes to Session Plan

Learning outcomes are statements of what a learner is expected to know, understand or be able to do by the end of a defined period of time and indicate how that knowledge or skill will be demonstrated. Understanding how outcomes are linked to improving student learning, and ultimately teaching are essential aspects of effective and aligned course design, where the instructional activities and assessment strategies are explicitly linked. In this session participants will have an opportunity to identify and write their own learning outcomes, and determine the educational experiences that allow students to develop and achieve the intended learning outcome including assessment and feedback strategies, and learning activities.

Questioning for Effective Teaching and Learning

“It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question” (Eugene Ionesco). The questions we ask are often the most powerful opportunities for learning. Yet engaging in the art of teaching and learning through questioning is a challenging endeavor of continual development. In this workshop, participants will experiment with various strategies for the artful use of questioning in effective teaching and learning.
