Units: 3.00
Term: Fall 2023
Instructor: Dr. Skaltsa

This course offers a survey of the major developments in Classical and Hellenistic art and architecture in the ancient Greek world. This was a formative period, stretching from the birth of democracy in Athens to the Roman conquest of the Greek world. Engaging with a wide range of ancient artefacts, from bronze statues to marble temples, and from painted pottery to wall paintings, the course explores the visual imagery of Classical and Hellenistic Greek cities and sanctuaries. Images, objects, and monuments will be contextualized in their archaeological record. Together, we will ask questions such as: Who were the patrons of this art and to what audience(s) was it addressed? What were the roles of money, values, and local setting in the development of this art and architecture?
