GNDS 350/3.0 Feminism, the Body and Visual Culture

Dr. Rachael Johnstone

This course explores the role of visual culture in shaping, regulating, and informing the way bodies are read in different cultures and time periods, with particular attention paid to the female form. The primary focus of this course is on depictions of the body over an individual’s life span, from the identification of sex in sonograms through to old age. Intersections of race, class, and sexuality will be examined alongside gender to create a more complete picture of the ways visual representations are used to both reinforce and challenge the sex/gender system. While some historical examples will be used, the bulk of the course engages with modern representations of the body and ongoing sites of struggle for recognition, including advertising and medicine
