Philosophy and Goals

The BISC is part of a diverse community that boasts students from all over the world. The Castle embraces acceptance and appreciation of all people, regardless of race, origin, sex, age, gender identity, affectional or sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, spiritual practice, religion, disability, sport capability, or any other dimension of personal lifestyle.

Staff at the BISC live and develop an environment of mutual respect and interpersonal cooperation while engaging in positive interactions. The BISC believes that students and staff should have the opportunity to learn from one another and become citizens with a greater understanding and respect for one another.

By coming to the BISC, students are engaged in social programming, academics, and field studies that encourages diversity and inclusivity. The BISC treats degrading or hurtful attitudes and actions seriously. The BISC believes that society is strengthened by human diversity of thought, expression, and progressive growth fostered by an inclusive community.

Every person has equal worth and will be treated with the utmost dignity and respect at the castle.

Our Philosophy

Student Services has structured the student conduct process and the BISC General Rules and Regulations based on three principles determined by our colleagues in Residence on the Kingston campus:

  • Rules and Regulations are remedial in nature and are therefore designed to educate students about their responsibilities as members of the residence community and the consequences of their actions.
  • The safety and security of every student is the responsibility of everyone in the BISC community.
  • The BISC is a community that values mutual respect of the rights, responsibilities, dignity, wellbeing, and academic pursuits of all members.

Goals of the Rules and Regulations

  • Encourage students to make positive choices and accept responsibility for their behaviour.
  • Encourage students to resolve their own challenges in a mature and respectful manner.
  • Promote the safety and security of residence.

Please be aware that although the BISC is part of Queen’s University, Canada, students will be subject to UK law. In some instances penalties may be different to those in your home country. The BISC Rules and Regulations apply to all students anywhere on the BISC estate and on BISC-related activities.
