First Year English Language Requirements

  • English is the language of instruction at the BISC.
  • Candidates must be able to communicate competently in both oral and written English to succeed.
  • Unless you are a national of a majority English-speaking country (MESC), you must demonstrate knowledge of the English language. The minimum standard for entrance into the UK by UK Visas and Immigration is Level B2 (IELTS 5.5). The BISC requires a minimum of Level B2 (IELTS 6.5) score for admission. Students MUST take the IELTS Academic module. Students of certain nationalities may be required to take IELTS for UKVI. Please contact the BISC before taking your IELTS test to seek confirmation. TOEFL scores will not be accepted.
  • Note that UK Visas and Immigration determines who must demonstrate knowledge of English based on nationality and not residency. Students on passports from countries including China, South Korea, and Japan, must demonstrate knowledge of English. This includes Canadian Permanent Residents from these countries.
  • Find out more about the IELTS test, IELTS for UKVI, recognised test centres and a list of exceptions for proving knowledge of English.
