Our annual report provides us with an excellent opportunity to reflect on a year now past. It allows us to highlight some of the remarkable people who make up the Queen’s community – from our students and faculty, to our over 140,000 accomplished alumni making a difference throughout the world. By outlining our financial reality, this report also gives us a clear sense of where we stand as we set goals and move into the future. After all, enabling exceptional people to do exceptional things requires sound financial footing.

Shifting economic conditions worldwide have certainly put a strain on university resources, including our own here at Queen’s. That’s one of the reasons we recently implemented a new activity-based budget model. It will help with transparent planning and will create incentives to develop alternative revenue streams and reduce costs. Like a sturdy foundation for growth, our Academic Plan and Strategic Research Plan, together with our overarching Strategic Framework, are helping us chart a course forward, too. Each component is vital as we pursue our goal of being the research-intensive university with a transformative student learning experience. Our forthcoming Campus Master Plan will further support that goal by providing a vision for our physical evolution.

We are a community of people who push the limits of what can be achieved and who want to make a difference in the world. This report celebrates this distinctive feature of Queen’s by promoting the amazing successes our outstanding colleagues and students have accomplished over the last year. As much as it celebrates what we’ve done, however, it also sets the bar for the year to come. I hope it will inspire you, as it does me, as we continue to work together to build the Queen’s of the future.
