Improving Human Mobility
Human Mobility Research Centre
The Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC), a partnership between Queen’s and Kingston General Hospital, brings together expertise from medicine, engineering, health sciences and computer science to solve human mobility issues.
HMRC helps people lead more mobile lives by developing innovative, effective treatment for bone and joint disorders caused by arthritis, osteoporosis, injury, and related problems.
One example of HMRC’s success is the Niagara Foot, a prosthetic foot that improves mobility for people who have lost lower limbs. The Niagara Foot was designed specifically for affordability, as well as flexibility and durability, to assist people in need in developing and post-conflict areas. The device won the gold award in the rehabilitation and assistive-technology products category at the 2012 Medical Design Excellence Awards in Philadelphia.
