Queen's University

Bruce and Camp School

Dear Queen's SKHS Supporter,

At Camp School

Kinesiology and Health Studies students know the importance of hands-on learning, and take every opportunity to apply their knowledge in positive ways. When we see the initiative taken by the current and recent students, both on campus and in the community, we are proud to be Phys Ed alumni.

In early 2010, when financial restrictions threatened to cancel the outdoor learning and experiential class, affectionately called Camp School, students initiated a fundraising campaign to "Save Camp School".

Their passion and initiative has inspired us, and today we challenge you to help create a sustainable endowment to "Save Camp School" in perpetuity .

Learning opportunities reach beyond the classroom

Just as it was for us in the 70's, Camp School and other activity-based learning opportunities remain a formative component of today's Physical Education, Kinesiology and Health Studies programs.

There is something about portaging a canoe over rocky trails while singing camp ditties that creates friendships and memories that endure forever as the best time we had at school.

These opportunities allow students to broaden their learning environments, while forging stronger relationships with each other and with their broader communities.

Supporting the future and honouring the past

Dr. Donald deFrayne Macintosh (known to all as Dr. Mac) also shared this opinion.

Those of us fortunate enough to attend Queen's while he was Director of the School of Physical and Health Education from 1965 to 1984, and a professor until his death in 1994, were privileged to learn from a very dedicated, passionate man. His greatest desire was providing his students with the skills and knowledge required for successful lives and careers.

We have pledged to match donations up to $100,000 to build an endowment for Camp School and other experiential programs in memory of Dr. Mac. When the endowment reaches $250,000, enough interest will be earned each year to run the program in perpetuity and a lecture theatre in the new Kinesiology building will be named in Dr. Mac's memory.

This may sound like a lofty goal, but when we work together we can create change. Every gift made plays an important part in building the endowment and saving Camp School for the next generation of students.

Donors like you ensure their initiative creates lasting change

Thanks in part to donors like you, Queen's School of Kinesiology and Health Studies is a community where students speak their minds, shape their education, take initiative and create lasting change. They believe in Camp School and are doing all they can to keep it alive.

But the students can't do it without us. Please, join us and add your support with a gift to the Dr. Macintosh SKHS Camp School & Learning Opportunities Fund today.

Thank you,
Bruce McFarlane (PhysEd'78) and Janice Heard (PhysEd '80)
