Glossary of Terms
- Concentration: A concentration refers to a group of courses in a common field of study. (e.g. History is a "concentration" within a Bachelor of Arts.)
- Concentration Type (Minor/ Major/ Medial): Students choose to pursue different types of concentrations which will determine the number of credits required. (e.g. A minor is a type of concentration. In a Bachelor of Arts this would require students to achieve 30 credit units in one concentration.) For more information regarding concentration types please refer to the Academic Calendars.
- Elective Credit: An elective credit is a credit that may be counted towards the completion of a degree and the overall number of credits achieved. Elective credits do not replace other courses at Queen's and are not associated with a specific concentration.
- Exclusion: There are some cases where two or more courses (from various departments) are considered similar enough in content that credit will only be given for one of the courses. In most cases, holding credit for an excluded course(s) will prevent a student from registering in the excluded courses.
- Exemption: In some cases, a student may be given permission (either by a particular department or the Associate Dean of Studies) to register in a more advanced course without having taken the prerequisite course beforehand. In these situations, the student is "exempted" from the prerequisite course, and will not be given credit for that course.
- External Transfer Student: Students applying to become a full or part time student at Queen's after having attended another post-secondary institution.
- Faculty: A faculty is a broad division within a university encompassing one degree program or a number of related degree programs. Some examples would be, "The Faculty of Arts & Science," and "The Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering." Faculties can also be referred to as "schools" such as the "School of Business."
- Internal Transfer Student: Students applying to switch to a different Faculty or School than the one in which they were previously registered. (e.g. A student currently registered in the Faculty of Arts & Science at Queen's can apply for an internal transfer to the School of Business at Queen's.)
- Specified Credit: A specified credit may be granted in cases where the content of the completed course has an exact equivalent at Queen's. (e.g. AP Calculus AB = Queen's course: MATH 123)
- Transferable Course(s): Internal and external transfer students can have their previously completed courses assessed for possible transferable courses. A course may be determined to be ‘transferable' in the case where the content of the completed course has an exact equivalent at Queen's or a significant amount of material overlap. Students may be awarded credit towards their degree for these transferable courses.
- Transferable Failure(s) from Another University: Courses at another university in which a student has received a failing grade will appear as a failure on their Statement of Transfer Credit, but the failures will not appear on their Queen's transcript.
Transferable Failure(s) from Queen's: Courses taken in another program at Queen's in which a student has received a failing grade will be transferred over to their new Queen's program of study. While these courses will not be factored into the student's academic average in the new program, the number of failures are noted on the student's academic record. These courses will not appear on the student's Statement of Transfer Credit.
- Unspecified Credit: Students may be granted an unspecified credit in cases where the content of the completed course is recognized to be appropriate for a specific concentration within a Faculty but does not have a direct equivalent course at Queen's. (e.g. AP European History = HIST 1UNS due to the fact that Queen's does not have a course that directly corresponds with the course description of AP European History.)
