Supreme Court rules against copyright fees: Queen's University expert
Queen’s University copyright expert Laura Murray is available to comment on the Supreme Court ruling against copyright fees, specifically the court siding with educators. It found the Copyright Board had incorrectly zeroed in on teachers who photocopied materials for their students. The ruling will have a major financial impact on education institutions across Canada that pay for the right to photocopy.
“It’s astonishing, I’m surprised by the ruling,” says Dr. Murray. “It’s a big win for education. The court applied a standard of reasonableness in this case.”
Dr. Murray is coauthor of Canadian Copyright: A Citizen’s Guide and operates a website focusing on copyright in Canada.
Please note Dr. Murray is not available for interviews after 2:30 pm.
