Summer studentships offer undergrads the opportunity to hone research skills
The Undergraduate Student Summer Research Program is a collaborative program aimed at supporting students from social sciences, humanities, and education.Continuing undergraduate students who would like to pursue research in the fields of social science, humanities, and education are encouraged to apply for the 16-week Undergraduate Student Summer Research Program (USSRP) that will run this summer from May to August.
The successful applicants will have the opportunity to engage in discovery-based learning, develop research and presentation skills, and make connections with top researchers at the university.
“Queen’s is committed to supporting and encouraging all students who wish to pursue research,” says Steven Liss, Vice-Principal (Research). “By facilitating collaborative work between faculty and students, this innovative new program aims to provide a supportive and stimulating environment for our undergraduate researchers. This is also a great opportunity for undergraduates to experience the campus and Kingston over an entire 12 month period.”
The program is open to students enrolled in social science, humanities, and education – where summer student research funding is typically less available – but these students may also consider projects in other disciplines or outside their own fields of study.
In order to apply for the program, students must find a faculty member at Queen’s who is willing to sponsor them and who can provide the necessary supervision and resources for their research project. Interested students and faculty members are encouraged to contact each other directly and collaboratively develop research proposals for submission.
“As someone who learned a lot from a summer research positions when I was a student at Queen's, I'm very pleased to be able to support this new initiative of the Vice-Principal (Research) to give undergraduates a first-hand experience of research in collaboration with a faculty mentor,” says Principal Daniel Woolf.
A maximum of 20 summer studentships will be awarded, each worth $5,000. Faculty sponsors are required to provide an additional $1,000, bringing the total funding for each summer studentship to $6,000.
