Queen’s University civil engineering professor Neil Hoult is available to discuss how engineers monitor and maintain bridges, in light of the federal government report on the uncertain future of one of Canada’s busiest bridges (Champlain Bridge in Montreal).

The Champlain report recommends building a new $1.3 billion bridge because annual repairs of $25 million would only prolong the life of the bridge and not produce a long-term fix.

Dr. Hoult hasn’t read the Champlain Bridge report but can discuss in general infrastructure management, structural deterioration and structural integrity. He is currently conducting research to develop sensors to better monitor bridges for structural deterioration.
