An international electrocardiology conference attracted top researchers from around the world and put Kingston on the map as an important destination for cardiac research. Now, 11 papers presented at the 2011 event are featured in the most recent Journal of Electrocardiology.

“The most important researchers in the world gathered here,” says Adrian Baranchuk (School of Medicine) who organized the 38^th International Congress on Electrocardiology. “This event was the perfect way for us to interact scientifically.”

The cover of the journal’s May/June issue features an oil painting of Kingston’s waterfront by presenter Ljuba Bacharova of Slovakia. The issue also includes an editorial and two research papers by Dr. Baranchuk who also works as a physician at Kingston General Hospital.

Dr. Baranchuk attended the congress in Russia three years ago and proposed Kingston as the site in 2011. His proposal was accepted but the economic downturn threatened the success of the event. Fortunately, Queen’s and the City of Kingston responded to the challenge.

“Queen’s stepped up financially and the Sheraton Group made a major effort,” he says. “Once the Kingston Economic Development Corporation took over our gala night, local industry provided the resources we needed to make the congress a success.”
